Understanding Volumetric Weight
What is Volumetric Weight?
Volumetric weight, also known as dimensional weight, is a calculation that reflects the density of a package. It is used by courier services to determine shipping costs for lightweight, bulky packages. This ensures fair pricing for space utilization in transport vehicles.
How is it Calculated?
Volumetric weight is calculated using the formula: (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Divisor. The standard divisor is 5000 for domestic shipping and 3500 for international shipping. This gives you the dimensional weight in kilograms.
Which Weight is Charged?
Shipping charges are based on the higher of either the actual weight or the volumetric weight of the package. This is known as the chargeable weight. Carriers use this method to ensure fair pricing for both heavy and bulky items.
